MASC STATE CHARITY: Special Olympics of Missouri

MASC chose Special Olympics as our charity of choice nearly 15 years ago. Since that time we have been raising funds and awareness across the state and among our membership. Member schools are encouraged to assist with Special Olympics events in their areas. Many of our schools host recruiting parties for athletes, assist at events, do fundraisers, act as coaches, provide moral support and include athletes in their own student council activities.

The past several years, MASC and the state president schools have introduced Special Olympic athletes and coaches at the state convention. In addition, a donation has been made to Special Olympics. Last school year MASC member schools raised nearly $60,000 for SOMO and performed 12,000 hours of volunteer service. This past summer at the Missouri Institute for Student Leadership Camp, "Fulton Camp" delegates raised $3,046.00 for Special Olympics through an "Adopt A Duck for A Buck" Duck Race.

Our efforts give Missouri Special Olympians an advantage. More importantly, our student council members are empowered by being volunteers.

This "unbearable" event is a unique opportunity for individuals, businesses and organizations to support local Special Olympic athletes by jumping, diving or crawling into the sparkling, frigid waters of Missouri. Since its inception 14 years ago, 8,527 Missourians have taken the Plunge in lakes across the state, raising $1,853,751.

If you're too chicken to make the splash, be a fan by making a pledge to a braver soul or by volunteering at the event.

Proceeds support year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than 15,000 children and adults with mental disabilities who participate in Special Olympics Missouri.

Special Olympics Athletes are the reason for freezin'... it's Polar Bear Plunge Season!  For more information and to learn how you can join in on the Polar Bear Plunge, e-mail Trish Lutz
